Down The Colorado

On my sidebar, the attentive reader will note an individual known here as, "The Other Ed Abbey." "Ed" hails from Iowa, but his blog handle is, of course, an homage to the famous author, whose seminal work Desert Solitaire, together with his more gonzo offerings like The Monkey Wrench Gang inspired a generation of outdoor enthusiasts. I, for one, resolved to prowl the Colorado Plateau after reading about ten pages of the former.

In any event, the other Ed is republishing his Grand Canyon Journals which describe a trip by dory down the Colorado from Lee's Ferry to Lake Mead -- the whole navigable Grand Canyon. It's a great read, with great photos and I encourage you to visit and comment. I appreciate Ed's sharing his story and photos with the rest of us, although I must confess, I occasionally experience waves of jealousy at having not yet had the same experience. My experience with the Grand Canyon have been from the rims:

From The North Rim

Ditto

or at the bridge downstream from Lee's Ferry, the last place to cross the river before Hoover Dam:

Looking Upstream

Anyway, go over to Ed's and say, "Hello" and enjoy and trip in the wilds of Arizona.

Cheers.

R. Sherman

Yes, I've been enjoying Ed's journey too. You know, I've only been to the North Rim of the canyon, but living in S. Utah for a decade, I've been to it at many different places

Another resolve, yet not quite as firm as Ed's!

Rafting the Grand Canyon is still on my Top 5 Things To Do before I do list. Gotta get this done!

We are in the saving/planning stages for a trip out west in 2-3 years. I can't wait to see this in person and not from an altitude of 30,000 feet.

What a wonderful journey to have undertaken. The Grand Canyon is somewhere I long to see. Your photos (as ever) are fabulous.

Thamks for directing me to Ed's journals. Very interesting :)

R. Sherman - My apologies for not stopping by sooner on a post about me. I've been out for a few days and have computer issues that have only just been resolved with a new one.

I'm glad that you enjoy it and to all your readers, I offer this. Please do plan a trip down the canyon and don't skip, do the entire length dam to dam or you will end up one of many who just have to go back a couple years later to finish what they started. I recommend a dory boat if you have the time as it is certainly the best way to go. Finally, if you have any questions at all, shoot me an email from the link found in my sidebar. I will be happy to respond.

I've been there and done that but I'm saving for a future trip with my family to do it again. It was that good!
